By now, just about everyone has a cell phone. A study now proves that many cell phone users are careless with their devices.

When you leave the house, you usually have one thing with you at all times: your cell phone. Before you head out, however, you should turn off a specific function on it. According to a study by the University of Hamburg, you could be in trouble if you don’t.

Hackers are happy
When on the road, most people don’t care about the WLAN and don’t turn it off. However, the study Probing for Passwords – Privacy Implications of SSIDs in Probe Requests shows that this is not entirely harmless.

According to HNA, anyone who leaves the WLAN function of their cell phone activated runs the risk that “hackers can spy out passwords, names and e-mail addresses.

Security tips from a competent source
In most areas of Germany and Austria, it is sufficient to use mobile data when on the move, as Bild reports. However, the WLAN (which can be blocked at home by particular opposing walls) doesn’t care: it still tries to find connection possibilities in public spaces. This can be fatal. According to HNA, “you leave a kind of “fingerprint” with data in the networks.”

The Federal Office for Information Security, therefore, advises the following behaviour:

Only switch on the WLAN function when you need it! The following also applies to use in public areas: A switched-off WLAN does not provide a target for attack. It is best not to retrieve confidential data via a foreign WLAN network.
